Storm 5 REVIEWS

STORM 5 SHAKES HI FI NEWS
Consider as the reference magazine for UK hi-end hi-fi fans, Hi Fi News is often conservative in its conclusions about hi-fi, especially subwoofers. But Jonathan Gorse’s review in the January 2006 issue breaks with convention on a seismic scale. In a whole-heartedly positive review he observes that ‘what truly surprised me about the Storm 5 was its speed and timing. Even in the context of a lightening fast Naim system, the Storm was on the pace from note to note to a degree I haven’t experienced with a sub before…This is the fastest and most precise sub-bass system I’ve heard. It’s exhilarating to listen to and makes some seriously high-end subs sound half asleep.’ The verdict: ‘The Storm 5 is an absolutely outstanding product from the grand masters of sub-bass design.’

STORM 5 SCORES 96% IN WHAT HOME CINEMA MAGAZINE
In an increasingly competitive market, ‘Best Buy’ scores are never casually dispensed, but a near-perfect score is rare in the extreme. These marks are reserved for truly exceptional products, like the Storm 5 sub-bass system. Registering just four points off a perfect 100% score, the Storm 5 is as near a complete performer as you can find. What Home Cinema magazine has showered the Storm 5 with the utmost praise: ‘If you want the sonic equivalent of blunt force trauma, the REL Storm 5 can serve up a right thrashing. But that is like using a Ferrari to pull a caravan. This is a deeply capable, subtle sub that, with a deft hand at the controls, can fill out home cinema sound perfectly, so buy one!’

STORM 5 WINS GROUP TEST IN HOME CINEMA CHOICE
The Storm 5 system has triumphed over its rivals in a three-way group test in the UK’s leading A/V title Home Cinema Choice. Reviewer Adam Rayner was impressed most by its ability to dig deep: ‘What struck me most of all, when compared to the B&W PV1 (which is only £50 less), is that the REL Storm 5 drops effortlessly past where the PV1 stops, all the way to 15Hz! This means the deepest, most scary film throbs can be yours. Subsonics, bass harmonies…will all be enhanced by the Storm 5, when compared to the PV1. The grip and melodic ability belies the ‘mere’ 200W RMS power we are told is inside: the thing can growl like a very big carnivore indeed.’

STORM FORCE
In the June 2005 issue of Hi Fi Choice, Alvin Gold makes a forceful case for using the new REL Storm 5 in both music and movie systems. He observes that ‘the question with most subs is not whether you can use them for hi fi and home cinema together, but whether you’d want to. The answer in this case is most certainly, yes. The ST5 adds texture and pressure to the sound, and tonal differentiation too – the range of tonal colours, and the contrast between them, is improved when used with compact speakers, but there is enough depth and power to add usefully to larger speakers too.’ Hi Fi Choice June 2005

STORM 5 COLLECTS FIVE STARS FROM WHAT HI FI? MAGAZINE
The wonderful Storm 5 sub-bass system is the latest design from the bass maestros to achieve top marks in the UK’s top buying guide What Hi Fi? Sound and Vision. Leading the review emphatically with the headline ‘REL’s sub is another storming performer’, the magazine explores the virtues of REL’s winning ‘St’ design formula, noting that the 5-star Storm 5 brings added authority and extension to the sonic signature of agility and tunefulness established by the 5-star Stampede and Strata 5. The REL’s ability to add scale and dynamics without destroying a system’s rhythmic ability is congratulated, along with the Storm 5’s ‘clean, fast bass’ and ‘oodles of clarity and control’. Simultaneous connection of high and low level inputs to bolster LFE is also explored with the conclusion that ‘it works’. Finally, and tellingly, the magazine comments that ‘…you can buy even more low end weight for this kind of money, but such subs sound loose and blurred next to this one.’
